Statement on Addressing Racism and Disparities in Maternal Health
The MDMOM Program joins our public health, nursing, midwifery, and physician colleagues in denouncing racism in all its forms, systemic, institutional, and interpersonal. Racism is a public health crisis, which must be urgently addressed. Systemic racism permeates US social systems, including the healthcare system. Racism, in all its forms and in the lives of childbearing women, contributes to racial disparities in maternal health. Eliminating racial disparities in maternal health is central to the work of the MDMOM Program. We are committed to engaging in meaningful partnerships throughout Maryland in an effort to actively address racist and discriminatory policies and practices within maternity care systems.
